Shoulder to shoulder, back to back, 36 000 Javanese women are siting on dilapidated wooden benches, hand rolling and hand packing cigarettes at Gudang Garam factory, in Kederi, East Java, Indonesia, on Aug. 1, 2001. Gudang Garam is the world's number one maker of pungent clove cigarettes, popularly known as kretek. In dizzying smell of clove Javanese women hands work mechanically, nine hours a day, six days a week. A roller is paid by number of cigarette it produces, at maximum speed of hand rolling, of 5000-7000 cigarettes a day, a roller gets 20.Us dollar a week
